Buying Makeup Online

Should I buy makeup online or is it better to shop in person?

The simple answer is, it depends on what you are buying. Here’s my top 5 tips for online makeup shopping:

  1. Have you bought the item before?

If so then go for it, just wait till the sales and pick up a healthy discount, you can often get 20-30% off at places like Sephora or Adore Beauty

  2. Shopping for a new foundation.

I recommend going in store for this one so you can get a sample to try first. If you can’t get to a store you could either try using the shade matchers that sites like Charlotte Tilbury or Mecca offer, or buying a slightly lighter and a slightly darker than your usual colour and mixing the two to get the correct colour. This also does the double duty of covering you for Summer and Winter variances skin tone.

  3. Eyeshadow

Stick to neutral colours that are either cool, neutral or warm depending on your skin undertone. If you want to buy colours think about your eye colour and what colour is opposite on the colour wheel - these colours will make your eyes pop, e.g. Brown > Blue, Green > Pink or Purple, Blue > Peach or Terracotta.

  4. Lipstick and Blush

These two can be tricky in that images on a screen often look a different colour to what they do in person. Then you add in the colour of your lips and how that changes a lip colour from person to person. This is one situation where I’d definitely go in store to swatch on your hand. Blush is a safer bet as you can pretty confidently say that if the colour suits your undertone it will work for you and you can always choose a colour to match the colour family of your lipstick. Blush can also be applied sparingly for a subtle glow or go all out for a glorious pop of cheek colour.

  5. Mascara and Brows

Mascara is probably the most easy makeup product to buy online as you can go by the reviews, and if you don’t like it it’s the one product you probably change most often. Brow pencils are also a pretty safe bet and you can match to the colour of your brow hairs, just remember if you are grey to go with an ashy blonde or platinum shade.

So there you have it, my top 5 tips for makeup shopping online and avoiding those regretful impulse buys!
