My 5 top tips for choosing the right foundation for you

We’ve all had that experience where we go to buy foundation and come home with something that just isn’t right. It’s a bit like buying the right bikini or a perfect pair of jeans, it’s not always easy right?

But it doesn’t have to be super painful, if you follow my 5 top tips below I promise it will be easier.

  1. Work out your undertone

We all have an undertone to our skin that is either warm or cool. Have a look at the inside of your wrist - warm toned people generally have greenish looking veins while cool toned people have more blueish looking veins. Look at your skin, can you see more yellow or more pink or perhaps you are a mix of the two which would make you neutral. Generally warm toned people have light to medium or deep toned skin with a yellow to orange appearance while cool are light, medium or very deep with more pink or blue tones. This will determine what undertone you want in your foundation and will help you to ask for that when you go into the store or purchase online.

  2. Decide what skin type you are

Do you know whether you are dry, normal, combination or oily? If in doubt think about what your skin usually does around an hour after putting on your makeup. If you see no shine you are probably dry or normal. If you see some shine on the nose, forehead or chin you are probably combination and if you see shine everywhere then you are generally oily.

  3. Decide what finish you like

Do you prefer your foundation to be light and dewy, fuller coverage and matte or somewhere in between? The more descriptive you can be when you go shopping the better the chance of getting the right foundation for you.

  4. Do some research

Ask friends about what they like to wear or what brands work for them, read blogs and reviews or ask a makeup artist what brands they like to use in their kit.

  5. Go in store and ask for a sample so you can try it in natural light

This is probably my best tip! The lighting in stores can make you look lighter or darker than you are so always ask to try a sample before committing to a purchase. You want to take that sample home and try it on in natural light. Does the colour blend away seamlessly between your jaw and decolletage? If the answer is yes then you have the perfect match, if on the other hand you see a ‘tide line’ where the jaw meets the neck then you might have either the wrong undertone or the foundation is too dark for you. If it’s too light you will feel pale or washed out.

So there you go, it doesn’t have to be painful at all! And if you would like my help to make the process even easier don’t hesitate to get in contact to book in a makeup shopping session!
